How to renew a U.S. passport

Most adults renew by mail or online. You do not go to a post office to renew, and a post office should not charge the $35 acceptance fee for a mail renewal. You only need a facility near you if you do not qualify to renew.

Do not qualify? Apply in person

Can you renew?

You can renew by mail if you can answer yes to all of these:

If any answer is no, use Form DS-11 at an acceptance facility. You can also use Form DS-82 to get your first passport card when you already have a book, or your first book when you already have a card.

Online or by mail

Online renewal is only for routine service. You can renew online if you also meet every rule below, in addition to the mail rules:

Online, you can renew a book, a card, or both, and you can add the document you do not already have. You cannot switch from a card alone to a book alone, or from a book alone to a card alone — those go by mail. Do not mail the old passport if you renew online. Keep it. Start at renew online. You have to submit your own application; third-party services cannot do it for you.

If you need the passport sooner than six weeks, or you do not meet the online rules, renew by mail with Form DS-82.

How to renew by mail

  1. Complete Form DS-82. Print page 1 and page 2 single-sided, then sign and date it. The passport forms tool fills it in for you.
  2. Staple one 2×2 color photo, taken in the last six months, with four staples at the corners. White or off-white background, no glasses.
  3. Include your most recent passport book, card, or both. It comes back in a separate mailing, which can take up to two weeks after the new passport arrives.
  4. Add a name-change document if the passport is not in your current name.
  5. Pay by check or money order to “U.S. Department of State.” Do not send cash. There is no $35 acceptance fee.
  6. Mail the packet with USPS, preferably a trackable service, to the address for your state and service level. Use the address printed on the current form if it differs from the list below.

Questions

Can I renew my passport at the post office?

No. If you qualify, renew by mail or online and send Form DS-82 to the State Department. Post offices and other acceptance facilities take new applications, not renewals, and should not charge a $35 fee to review a mail renewal.

How long does passport renewal take?

Routine processing is 4–6 weeks after the State Department receives the application. Expedited mail service is 2–3 weeks and costs an extra $60. Mailing can add up to two weeks in each direction. Online renewal is routine only.

How much does it cost to renew a passport book?

A passport book renewal is $130. A card is $30, and a book and card together are $160. There is no $35 acceptance fee for a renewal by mail or online.

What if my passport was issued when I was under 16?

You cannot renew it. Apply in person with Form DS-11 at an acceptance facility, even if that passport has not expired.
