Expedited and urgent passports

Expedited service shortens State Department processing to 2–3 weeks for an extra $60. A trip inside 14 days is a different path: a regional passport agency, not an acceptance facility on this map.

Applying in person for a new passport

Three clocks

Processing time starts when the application arrives. It does not include mailing, which can take up to two weeks each way unless you pay for faster shipping. Figures are from the State Department’s processing times page as updated in 2026.

Service Processing Where
Routine 4–6 weeks Mail, or an acceptance facility for a new application
Expedited 2–3 weeks Mail, or an acceptance facility, plus $60
Within 14 days Agency appointment Regional passport agency, with proof of travel

Online renewal is routine only. You cannot expedite it, and you should not travel for at least six weeks after you submit it. If you need it sooner, renew by mail.

Expedited service

Add $60 to the application fee. On a new application you still pay the $35 acceptance fee at the facility. A renewal by mail has no acceptance fee. Optional 1–3 day return of a passport book was $22.05 on the 2026 fee chart. That option is not available for a card by itself. Confirm every amount on the passport fees page.

For a first passport, a child, or anyone who does not qualify to renew, you still apply in person. Browse acceptance facilities by state and book the post office visit on the USPS scheduler.

Travel within 14 days

Urgent travel means an international trip within 14 calendar days, or a life-or-death emergency on a shorter clock. That appointment is at a regional passport agency. You need proof of travel. Acceptance facilities on this map take routine applications. They cannot issue a passport for a trip next week.

Questions

How do I expedite a passport?

Pay the extra $60 expedite fee. Processing is then 2–3 weeks after the State Department receives the application. Mailing can still add up to two weeks in each direction.

Can a post office get me a passport in two weeks?

No. Post offices and other acceptance facilities take applications. They do not print the passport. A trip within 14 days needs an appointment at a regional passport agency.

Can I expedite an online renewal?

No. Online renewal is routine service only. If you need the passport sooner than six weeks, renew by mail and pay the expedite fee, or use a passport agency if you are traveling within 14 days.
